Walking Together Through Grief: Companionship at Life’s Sacred Transitions

Rev. David Wakil Matthews
December 14th | 12:00pm – 2:00pm | In person and on Zoom

Walking Together Through Grief: Companionship at Life’s Sacred Transitions. Interfaith companion and chaplain, Reverend Wakil David Matthews, shares his journey into end-of-life planning and grief companionship. Over the last several years, he has taught his “Before You Go” End-of-Life Planning workshop to more than 400 participants. He also co-hosts a podcast called End of Life Conversations, where he and his co-host, Reverend Mother Annalouiza Armendariz, share conversations about death and dying. Reverend Wakil also serves as a spiritual companion to the grieving. In this talk, he will offer practical wisdom on preparing for death, understanding grief as a spiral (not a linear process) that encompasses all kinds of loss, and learning to truly show up for those who are suffering. This talk challenges common misconceptions about grief, provides concrete guidance on what helps (and what hurts) when supporting the bereaved, and invites us all to normalize conversations about dying while cultivating compassionate presence with ourselves and others. Whether you’re navigating your own loss, supporting someone who is grieving, or want to prepare your loved ones for the inevitable, you’ll leave with both practical tools and a deeper understanding of how to walk together through life’s difficult passages.

Rev. Wakil David Matthews is an interfaith minister ordained through the Sufi Ruhaniat International Order, a universalist and ecumenical Sufi organization. He is dedicated to working with those engaged in end-of-life work and those involved in social activism. He offers Spiritual and Grief Companionship. Rev Wakil holds a Master of Arts in Social Change from the Starr King School for Ministry and a certificate in Spiritual Direction from the Interfaith Chaplaincy Institute (CHI). He is a Sufi teacher, companion, and guide in the Ruhaniat Order and a senior teacher in the Inayatiyya Order.
