Journey to the Heart: Exploring Sufi Wisdom and Practice

Rev. Wakil David Matthews
December 7th | 4:00pm – 5:30pm | In person

Discover the mystical heart of Islam through an exploration of Sufi history, teachings, and practice with Reverend Wakil David Matthews. This talk traces Sufism from its origins in early Islam through its golden age to its modern Western expression, with special focus on Hazrat Inayat Khan’s universalist message and Samuel Lewis’s embodied practices. We will explore the “Ten Sufi Thoughts,” learn about transformative practices like zikr (remembrance) and the Dances of Universal Peace, and understand how Sufism bridges diverse spiritual traditions through the principle of “unity in diversity.” Perfect for seekers interested in mystical experience, interfaith spirituality, and the journey from ego to divine presence.

Rev. Wakil David Matthews is an interfaith minister ordained through the Sufi Ruhaniat International Order, a universalist and ecumenical Sufi organization. He is dedicated to working with those engaged in end-of-life work and those involved in social activism. He offers Spiritual and Grief Companionship. Rev Wakil holds a Master of Arts in Social Change from the Starr King School for Ministry and a certificate in Spiritual Direction from the Interfaith Chaplaincy Institute (CHI). He is a Sufi teacher, companion, and guide in the Ruhaniat Order and a senior teacher in the Inayatiyya Order.
